As it stands today, Gullwing Engineering is one of the top engineering companies in Cape Town. Established by Dennis and Desiree Powell in 1989, Gullwing Engineering has been around for decades. The company was originally established to fill a gap in the South African market for the manufacture of engineering parts and components. This gap came to exist mainly because of the fact that it was extremely difficult to import products of this nature into South Africa due to the sanctions that were held against our country during the Apartheid era. This, however, is not the case anymore and today Gullwing Engineering is at the forefront of providing quality parts and components to clients in a diverse range of industries.

Gullwing Engineering is, and always has been completely family owned, and in 1990, Dennis Powell’s son, Alan Powell, left his former job at Atlas Aircraft to join his father in manufacturing general and precision engineering components as a member of Gullwing Engineering. During the company’s first few years in business, the team at Gullwing Engineering specialised in the skilled craft of designing, developing and refurbishing surgical instruments and other medical instruments. Since then however, the company has progressed towards concentrating more on the manufacture of general and precision engineering components and we have become a leading, and respected, service provider in the local industry.

We are situated in Montague Gardens, Cape Town, but our services are available to clients across South Africa.

Today, Gullwing Engineering makes use of the very latest EdgeCAM technology used by the programming and design department to program highly complex commands into the company’s computer numerical control (CNC) machines. The combination of the team’s skills and the advanced technology we use, enable us at Gullwing Engineering to manufacture virtually any component imaginable for our clients.

Although Alan has taken over from his father as the Managing Director of Gullwing Engineering, Dennis is still actively involved with machine designs and complex tooling, constantly keeping an eye on the company he established almost 30 years ago. Dennis’ wife, Desiree and his daughter Debi are also both involved in the company, managing the admin and finance departments thereof.

The Powell family has a passion for their company and their employees, and their extensive knowledge and experience in engineering has enabled them to create a successful company that has truly stood the test of time.
