EXPERT PRESSWORK FROM GULLWING ENGINEERING’S PRESS MACHINE
At Gullwing Engineering, we make use of our in-house press machines to machine a wide variety of perfectly cropped components. We carry expert knowledge on sheet metal pressing, and we know exactly how it should be done in order to manufacture the best quality end products for our clients.
Historically, metal used to be shaped by applying force with a hammer. As the need to press more metal grew, larger hammers were manufactured. This job was dangerous, as one person would be responsible for swinging the hammer, whilst the other person had to move and position the workpiece. This method was later replaced by machinery, using both electrical and steam technology, and today’s machinery utilises a combination of electric motors and hydraulics to achieve the required pressure.
We own seven off-Eccentric Presses of varying capacities, which allows us to manufacture components of any size and shape. The machines we use have capacities ranging from 5 to 105 tons. Due to the fact that each of our machines have a different capacity, we are able to shape and/or form any piece of sheet metal. We carefully pick the machine most suited to the specific application in question, depending on the thickness of the metal sheet, as well as its physical form. We work extremely carefully when doing press work for our clients, so as to ensure minimal wastage, and to ultimately produce end products of superior quality with no undesirable rough edges.
Our 105-ton press machine is fitted with an automatic strip feeder and decoiler, which enables us to produce components in large quantities, without interruption. We do not only do long production runs however, we are also able to accommodate short run production for clients who do not need large quantities of the specific component being manufactured.
Clients are welcome to supply their own press tools if they wish to however our press machine is one of the best in the industry, and we have produced continuously superior results when using it.
WHAT EXACTLY ARE PRESS MACHINES AND PRESS WORK?
Machine press work can be explained as a method of shaping metal by forming and bending it, or punching holes into the metal sheet in question. Press machines shape metal sheets into usable components by forcing it into a specific shape using impact or pressure, and it has become an essential tool in the metal forging and tool manufacturing industry.
In order to achieve a specific shape, these machines are fitted with different tools (one on the upper part of the machine, and another on the lower part thereof), in between which the metal sheet that is to be shaped is then placed to be pressed. Presses can be used to apply force vertically, horizontally, or even at an intermediate angle.
Press machines work extremely fast and have a number of different applications, which makes them very practical and cost-effective to use. Two main types of press machines used in the industry today are hydraulic and mechanical presses. The type of press machine required for a certain project depends on the size of the workpiece and the material used. The major difference between a hydraulic press and a mechanical press is the fact that a hydraulic press uses water to apply pressure to a workpiece, whereas a mechanical press has a motor that is responsible for performing the pressing action.
Press machines can be dangerous to use, but clients can rest assured that we at Gullwing Engineering have the necessary precautions in place. If you would like to find out more, or you would like to discuss a project with us, please feel free to contact us directly.
